Hillman Racing Hits the Track with Daytona 500 Champion Ward Burton

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 26, 2012) – Hillman Racing today announced that 2002 Daytona 500 Champion Ward Burton will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut behind the wheel of the No. 27 Hillman Racing Chevrolet with funding from State Waters Heaters in next month’s season-opening NextEra 250 at Daytona International Speedway.

Hillman Racing is making its NASCAR debut this season, but the organization is anything but new to the sport. Team owner Mike Hillman Sr. played a key role in the founding of Germain Racing and was the architect of the group’s two NASCAR championships in 2006 and 2010. Hillman acquired the championship-winning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series assets following the conclusion of the 2011 season and is set to embark as the owner and general manager of Hillman Racing for the 2012 season.

“First off, I have to thank Bob Germain for his friendship over the years; it’s because of that we were able to acquire the truck teams,” said Hillman. “I put my heart and soul into that organization and I wanted to continue the tradition of winning that we established there with the two Camping World Truck Series championships. I’m also appreciative of State Water Heaters for coming onboard as we continue to talk with additional marketing partners to grow this operation. Having a driver of Ward’s caliber entrusting me with the development of his son’s Jeb NASCAR career is a compliment to what I’ve been a part of in the Truck Series and the sport. I’m also looking forward to adding Ward to the list of drivers to win at least one race in each of the NASCAR National Series when we go to Daytona next month.”

In 375 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts, Burton has posted fives wins, seven poles and 24 top-five and 82 top-10 finishes. Burton also has four NASCAR Nationwide Series victories, seven poles, 23 top-five and 50 top-10 finishes in 161 starts.

“I am real excited about the things we have going on with Mike (Hillman Sr.) and his program. I think this is a real good thing for Jeb and his career,” said Burton. “Hillman Sr. is building a great team of people and we are hoping that we can bring some additional marketing partners on board with us to make this program a huge success. Jeb and I have our long-time supporter State Water Heaters on board with us and we are thrilled that they are going to be a part of our 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season and helping to kick off Jeb’s NASCAR debut.”

In addition to Burton, a driver development program is being established for Jeb Burton, the 19-year-old son of Ward. Since making his last NASCAR start, Burton has been using that time to focus on helping his son Jeb develop his racing career and his conservation efforts with The Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation.

Being the son of NASCAR’s 2002 Daytona 500 winner, it would be natural to think that Jeb Burton would have the hope of someday becoming a professional race car driver like his dad. Jeb has been racing since he was a kid, starting in go-karts and racing his way through the ranks in ASA and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, and now at 19, he is ready to step into one of NASCAR’s top tier racing series with Hillman Racing in No. 27 Chevrolet Silverado, sporting the same number that he has been racing in his Late Model division.

“I’m excited to race in the truck series,” said Burton. “This is a big step from the NASCAR Whelen Series but I am ready for it. I am comfortable with my crew chief Trip Bruce and the team of guys here at Hillman Racing. There are a lot of resources here with this race team and I am real appreciative for State Water Heaters and Mike Hillman Sr. for giving me this chance.”

“Nationwide Series Rising Star will drive the No. 43 Pilot Flying J Ford Mustang Full Time in 2012"

CONCORD, N.C. (Jan. 26, 2012) – Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) announced today the formation of a new NASCAR Nationwide Series team with driver Michael Annett and his long-time partner Pilot Flying J. The team will be run out of RPM’s Concord, N.C. race shop and will vie for the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship.

Annett, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, comes to Richard Petty Motorsports after spending last season at Rusty Wallace, Inc. He has posted 13 top-10 finishes in 105 Nationwide Series starts and drove to a ninth-place finish in the championship points standings last season.

“They say that when one door closes, another door opens, and that is most definitely true,” said Annett. “We were left scrambling a bit because of the situation with RWI and were unsure what the future held, but I couldn’t be happier with the way things have turned out. To have the chance to race for Richard Petty and to be under the RPM umbrella is amazing. It has all come together really quickly, but together with Pilot Flying J and Ford, this is the best opportunity I have ever had to race a Nationwide Series car. There’s a lot to be done before we get to Daytona in a few weeks and I can’t wait to dive in and get started.”

He drove to victory once again in the ARCA Series the next season at Daytona International Speedway and also piloted an entry in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in eight events that season. In 2009, he moved to the Nationwide Series with Germain Racing and posted four top-10 finishes en route to a 10th-place effort in the point standings. He remained at Germain through 2010 and in 2011 competed for RWI.

Dr. Joseph Mattioli, Pocono Raceway Patriarch, Passes

Long Pond, PA (January 26, 2012) ― Dr. Joseph Mattioli, Pocono Raceway Founder and Chairman of the Board, passed away today at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, surrounded by his loving family, following a lengthy illness. He was 86. “Doc” as he was known to friends and associates, was one of the most respected and admired men in automobile racing. He founded Pocono Raceway in the early 1960’s and has been at the helm of Pocono ever since. Under his leadership, the track grew in stature and has hosted 68 very successful NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Events. His passion and drive helped Pocono Raceway succeed when other tracks fell by the wayside. Pocono Raceway is the only remaining family owned and run track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. He was always concerned that race fans and race car drivers and their families were treated with the upmost respect and constantly upgraded procedures and Raceway facilities to meet that goal.

He kept his fingers on the pulse of stock car racing and read everything printed concerning the sport. He was in the office daily, until last fall, and oversaw all aspects of the Pocono Raceway operations. At age 83, Dr. Mattioli spearheaded an ambitious solar energy project. He built a three megawatt photovoltaic solar energy system on 25 acres at Pocono Raceway. It is the world’s largest solar-powered sports facility, making Pocono Raceway a leader in the renewable energy and environmental fields.

Dr. Mattioli was also well respected in the community. In 2009, he received the Philanthropic Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals for his generous and continuous contributions to local civic organizations, hospitals, schools and charities. He served on the board of directors of numerous organizations and was dedicated to improving the quality of life in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

He served in the Pacific during World War Two as a Navy medic. Using the G.I. bill, he enrolled in the dentistry program at Temple University (where he met his soon to be wife, Rose.) Upon graduation, he developed his dental practice into a very lucrative business by working 12 to 14 hour days, six and sometimes seven days a week. He then began investing in and developing properties in Philadelphia and Northeastern Pennsylvania where he became involved in the start up of Pocono Raceway.

Dr. Mattioli is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dr. Rose, daughters Louie and Michele and son Joseph Mattioli III, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His passing leaves a void in the NASCAR community and especially to his family and extended “Pocono Raceway” family.

Harvick's baby announcement overshadows RCR news

While most drivers are unveiling new paint schemes and sponsors during this week's NASCAR media tour, Sprint Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick unveiled his own surprise Wednesday evening. Seated on stage alongside Paul Menard and Jeff Burton, Harvick shared that wife DeLana is 14 weeks pregnant with the couple's first child.

Most members of the media present, along with nearly all of the RCR employees gave an audible gasp. Driver Jeff Burton leaned over and jokingly asked who the father was.

Harvick went on to say that their decision to start a family after 11 years of marriage was the main reason KHI shut its doors at the end of the 2011 season.

Richard Childress Racing also announced that the team will field the No. 33 for the first five races of the season. Elliott Sadler will pilot the General Mills/Kroger sponsored car at Daytona while Brendan Gaughan will drive the following four races with sponsor South Point Hotel and Casino.

Max Papis will also be joining the Richard Childress Nationwide Series team to compete at Road America. Papis, a "road-course ringer," will also serve as a driver coach to his RCR teammates to aide in strengthening their road-course racing skills.

Although there has been much change since absorbing the KHI organization, RCR has a total of nine full-time teams across the three series and more than 40 corporate sponsors.

Earnhart Jr. credits successes of 2011 to crew chief Steve Letarte

Dale Earnhardt Jr. met with members of the media Wednesday afternoon to discuss his thoughts on 2011 and his hopes for 2012. In front of television cameras and a plethora of voice recorders, Earnhardt Jr. went into detail about how his relationship with crew chief Steve Letarte changed his outlook on racing and the way he handles himself at the track.

According to Jr., Letarte asks more from him than anyone ever has in regards to doing things outside the cockpit. In the past he was expect to show up and race and that was all. Letarte isn't that kind of crew chief. He expects his drivers to be actively engaged in the process of setting up the car and has him "filling out forms and stuff about the races. Giving him information about the car after the races, setting in on discussions about the car in the garage area ... I'd never done any of those things in the 10 years I'd raced before."

With Letarte in his corner, Earnhardt Jr. believes he can go far and live up to his potential. Letarte cracks the whip, so to speak, and the combination worked well in 2011. Although he's still on a 129-race winless streak, the team is headed in the right direction and that's something that Earnhardt has not felt in a long time.

Earnhardt Jr. also discussed at length his Nationwide Series team and driver Danica Patrick saying, "She's assertive and determined and that's exciting, especially coming from a woman in this sport it's rare. It's very rare."

He openly admits his enthusiasm for Patrick is probably selfish, but can you really blame him for that? No matter where she goes or what she does Patrick is the center of attention. Not only is she a sponsor's dream in terms of marketability, but she has a "dynamic edge to her personality." That's something a team like his and the sport of NASCAR need.

NASCAR says no more "secret" fines, will disclose future fines to public

NASCAR has come under fire for their "secret" fines this past season, but the 2012 season will start with a breath of fresh air.

The ruling body issued a statement which read:

"NASCAR will no longer issue fines that are undisclosed. We looked at this issue from every angle and gathered feedback from the industry. While there are always sensitivities related to sponsor relationships and other leagues may continue issuing disclosed and undisclosed fines, NASCAR has decided that all fines moving forward will be made public after the competitor or organization that has been penalized has been informed."

That simple statement is music to the ears, and wallets, of drivers such as Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman and Brad Keselowski, whose fines were exposed by the media. Others have never come forward.

Hamlin's fine was likely for tweeting about NASCAR interference in the outcome of races, Newman's fine(s) were for criticizing the dangers of racing at Talladega and for reportedly punching Juan Pablo Montoya. Brad Keselowski's fine came to light after he openly (during a media session) criticized NASCAR's switch to electronic fuel injection (EFI). In all these instances, NASCAR levied fines, then swept them under the rug. No more!

The 2012 season starts with an open-book policy. You do the crime and you are subject to the media hounding you about it. The lesson: think before you speak, tweet, or punch!

Jade Gurss New Director of Corporate Communications for Andretti Autosport

Jade Gurss, author of In the Red, owner of publicity firm fingerprint inc., and the previous publicity coordinator for the Budweiser racing team has been appointed as the Director of Corporate Communications for Andretti Autosport.

Making the switch from NASCAR to the IndyCar side of racing should not be difficult for the Topeka, Kansas native with his diverse background in multiple forms of racing. He grew up around super modified racing, has experience in publicity operation for drag racing, and handled marketing and publicity for the CART and Formula 1 engine branch of Mercedes-Benz prior to his experience with the Budweiser team and formation of fingerprint inc.

In regard to his new position Gurss says, “I’ve always been very passionate about Indy car racing, and to be back in the sport with the most legendary name in racing, a roster of young, personable and fast drivers and a wide variety of sponsors is an ideal situation with immense potential. Terry Snyder Named Crew Chief For The No. 24 Of Max Gresham At Joe Denette Motorsports

Kernersville, NC (January 25, 2012) Joe Denette Motorsports (JDM) is pleased to announce that Terry “Richie” Snyder has been named crew chief for the No. 24 Made In USA Brand Chevrolet of Max Gresham for the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season.

Max Gresham, who will pilot the No. 24 machine and contend for the 2012 Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors, says Snyder’s experience in the series and his passion for the sport will be the key to success in 2012.

Kentucky Speedway making progress toward improvements

Planned changes at Kentucky Motor Speedway will better help the
flow of traffic and also add parking to the track.

The melee surrounding Kentucky Speedway’s July 2011 race isn’t one that fans will soon forget. After shelling out hundreds of dollars on tickets, fans found themselves in traffic for hours as they waited and waited to get in. Although many fans made it to the stands, thousands were turned away due to a lack of parking. Those who did make it in were greeted with a shortage of concessions and less than adequate facilities. What was supposed to be a great success for the state of Kentucky turned in to a public relations nightmare for Speedway Motorsports Incorporated (SMI) and left most fans declaring they would never return.

Since that weekend SMI, Kentucky Speedway’s parent company has worked to improve conditions and give fans the weekend they should have gotten the first time around.

During a press conference held on Wednesday, Kentucky Speedway outlined the following changes.

Expanded parking area ( with a total of 173 acres)
Current grass parking upgraded to include gravel aisles
Widening of I-71 exit ramp to improve the flow of traffic entering on to Kentucky 35
Improved plan for both foot and vehicle traffic
Better campsites, some with electrical service.

SMI founder Bruton Smith called what happened in 2012, “a little bit of a problem with traffic” saying that less than one third of those who were hired to act as vehicle parking attendants actually showed up.

“We’re making it better, better, better all the time,” said Smith as he addressed members of the media from all around the globe during the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway.

According to information released the amount of money spent on the track is, “north of 80 million dollars since we bought the place,” said Smith addressing the changes being made.

Kentucky will host their second Sprint Cup Series race on June 30.

Daytona is getting close and looking ahead, I decided to countdown to the Daytona 500 the best way I know how, looking back In the Rearview Mirror.

2011’s Daytona 500 was full of emotion, crowning the youngest winner of all-time and perhaps the most humble race winner ever. Trevor Bayne melted the hearts of America and captured the attention of teenage fans everywhere.

Long before Bayne, there was another magical moment at Daytona, this one involving a father and son. Dale Jarrett and Ned Jarrett were the lasting memory of the 1993 Daytona 500 as Ned sat in the booth calling his son across the finish line, openly cheering him on.

Ned Jarrett shouted “it’s the Dale versus Dale show” and that is simply how many fans remember the race. Dale Earnhardt Sr., the Intimidator, was close to victory as he had been so many times before. Dale Jarrett was like Earnhardt, following in the footsteps of his father, but was starting to gain momentum in his career. A win at the Daytona 500 would be paramount to either Dale – who would it be? Earnhardt or Jarrett? Would Jarrett, a relative newcomer, dare make a move on the man known as “the Intimidator?”

The last lap was a nail biter. Martha Jarrett was seen in a vehicle behind pit road praying as her son made the risky move on Earnhardt. The two cars touched, bouncing off each other as you can just imagine both drivers giving it their all – the grandest prize was on the line.

One to go, the while flag appears. Jarrett’s ahead as Earnhardt seems to be getting loose, heading high trying to gain on the No. 18 of Jarrett.

The ending for Earnhardt was more of the same; for Jarrett though, being able to say you beat “the Intimidator” is one heck of an accomplishment, winning the Daytona 500 – the cherry on top!

"Dale just slipped up high down there in Turn 3," Jarrett said as he relived the memories of the race. "It seemed like his car was a little loose getting into the corner and I was still wide open and able to get in there on the bottom and get a run. Everything worked out perfect.”

Dale Jarrett’s career became defined by the “Dale versus Dale” moment. That moment still plays on TV today. Jarrett’s career was remarkable, spanning 24 years and featuring 32 wins, 260 top tens and the pinnacle of his career: winning the 1999 Winston Cup championship.

Bayne and McMurray united by faith and Daytona 500 wins

Faith has always played a large role in NASCAR. Since the early days of the sport, the two have been intertwined in a way that makes it impossible to avoid. While other major sports shy away from talk of religion and even ridicule those who make public displays of their faith, NASCAR celebrates it. Drivers are seen praying with their teams on pit road, standing with heads bowed during the pre-race invocation.

During Tuesday's sessions of the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway, Jamie McMurray and Trevor Bayne, the two most recent Daytona 500 winners, discussed their faith and how it's gotten them through the tough times and made the good times a little sweeter.

McMurray, who saw success in 2010, winning three big races, is coming off the worst season of his career. A disappointing 27th in points isn't what the Missouri native had in mind, but his strong sense of faith helped him through the disappointment. When asked how his faith played a role in how he went on day to day when it sometimes felt everything was falling out from under him, McMurray said, "I just believe that there's a plan. No matter whether it's good or bad that happens to you, you just believe that there is a plan out there for you and just always stand behind it. If I have a bad day I know there's something better around the corner."

Bayne shocked the world winning the Daytona 500 in 2011, but later saw his share of misfortune. Sidelined for several weeks after being diagnosed with Lyme disease, Bayne lost the momentum he gained early on. Although he was able to capture his first Nationwide win at Texas Motor Speedway, it wasn't what he thought would be in the cards after Daytona. But regardless of what's going on in his life, Bayne is dedicated to spreading his faith. He commented on an upcoming mission trip saying, "The purpose is to spread the gospel. That's important to me, and it keeps me humble.”

On whether or not he's disappointed in the plans, or lack thereof, for 2012, Bayne said, "I can't be disappointed if that's what happens 'cause that's been the plan since the beginning of the offseason. It was never the goal. The goal was obviously full time ... we could have something come up."

Bayne and McMurray will put their faith and conviction to the test next month as they look to start the season on a solid note.

Steve Letarte wins the Papa Joe Hendrick Award of Excellence

Steve Letarte has been awarded the highest honor at Hendrick Motorsports: The Papa Joe Hendrick Award of Excellence.

Founded in 1995 as the Robert Gee Award, the Papa Joe Hendrick Award of Excellence has been bestowed each year on the member of the Hendrick Motorsports organization who most embodies the values, principles and ideals of the company. On Tuesday, Letarte was announced as the latest recipient.

The Papa Joe Hendrick Award of Excellence is a well-deserved honor for Letarte for his hard work in 2011. Being a new crew chief to a new driver isn’t always easy, but Letarte proved just how a little teamwork goes a long way.

Letarte had the weight of the world on his shoulders heading into the 2011 season. He took on a job that required big shoes to fill, becoming the crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 88 team. In addition to that, Letarte faced the fans of "Junior Nation" through the good, bad and the ugly. Not many crew chiefs can weather those storms, but Letarte proved he definitely can.

Earnhardt Jr., the most popular driver in NASCAR, hit a rough patch the past few years. Could Letarte get Earnhardt back to being a winning driver who competes for wins?

Not only did Letarte get Earnhardt back to being competitive, but Earnhardt made the Chase, something he hasn't done in over two years. Letarte proved that with good feedback and a positive attitude, anything is possible. It was also refreshing to see the carefree, laid-back Earnhardt Jr. again - something fans have not seen in a long while.

Letarte proved that a change in driver wouldn’t hold him back, that he’d still be the greatest crew chief that he knows how to be. He took on a hard task being Earnhardt Jr.’s crew chief, but he took it in great stride. It was a task that many said he’d fail at; however, he proved them all wrong.

Letarte may not have broken Earnhardt’s winless streak yet, but he did get NASCAR’s most popular driver back in the Chase as well as returned that missing fire inside of Junior.

Building on the progress of 2011, Letarte and Earnhardt Jr. head into the 2012 season looking forward.

Ford's 2013 Fusion sets the bar high

Ford Motor Company was the first of the big four manufacturers in NASCAR to unveil its 2013 Sprint Cup racecar. The Ford Fusion is sleek, racy and dare I say, a bit sexy. Simply put, it is one hot car!

“The NASCAR Nation is made up of car enthusiasts, and NASCAR fans certainly love to pull for a brand or make of car second only to being able to pull for their favorite driver,” said NASCAR President Mike Helton. “Today is a very significant landmark for us. It brings back the relevancy of NASCAR on the race track to what fans have in their homes and in their parking lots and garages and at their parking spots at work.”

The entire purpose of the 2013 redesign it to return NASCAR to the production car designs. Back when Lee Petty drove, his car was nothing more than one bought off a car lot. Nowadays - especially with the advent of the Car of Tomorrow in 2007 - racecars are highly manufactured and appear so, missing that appeal to fans of being like the car they drive on the street.

“We wanted Fusion to be the car that helped return ‘stock car’ to NASCAR,” said Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing. “I think fans, when they see the car, are just going to smile and cheer. It is going to re-engage them with the sport and make the sport better because there is just something natural about seeing racecars that look like cars in their driveways.”

SS Green Light Racing Set to Grow with Ross Chastain

MOORESVILLE, NC – January 24, 2012 –SS Green Light Racing is pleased to announce that 19-year old Florida late model standout Ross Chastain will join the team for 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. Chastain will pilot the team’s Toyota Tundra beginning with the NEXTERA ENERGY RESOURCES 250 at the famed Daytona International Speedway under the guidance of longtime driver, owner and crew chief Bobby Dotter.

A fifth generation farmer, Chastain has learned while working on the family farm that small seeds can blossom into succulent fruit in just a few months time and the young driver knows those same small seeds in racing can blossom into career of his dreams. “I’m very excited to work together with Bobby Dotter and I want to help grow with the team and improve myself throughout the year. I think we have set realistic goals and I’m excited to get to North Carolina and begin preparing for the season.”

Ross began his racing career at age twelve running the Fastkids trucks in his native state and has accumulated over 50 feature wins as he advanced through the ranks to late models. The Alva, FL native was the late model champion at the prestigious World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Raceway in 2011.

Ross ran five NCWTS races in 2011 finishing 10th in his first ever start at Lucas Oil Raceway and completed an impressive 98.5% of the laps in the five races with an average finish of 18.8. Last month, Chastain participated in an open ARCA test at the “World Center of Speed” in preparation for this February’s race posting lap times in the top quarter of the 79 drivers that attended.

Returning to its familiar No. 08 for the 2012 season, Chastain and the team SS Green Light team are guaranteed a starting spot for the first four races of the campaign. Sponsorship for the south Florida farmer is currently being finalized with multiple agricultural based businesses and will be announced at a later date. The team is also actively pursuing additional marketing partners for select races in the 22-race NCWTS schedule.

“My goal for 2012 is to run as many laps as possible and run up near the top ten each week,” said Chastain. “Bobby has a great reputation for developing young drivers and I’m looking forward to get to the shop to get some hand’s on experience on the trucks.”

The SS Green Light team has one of the longest tenures in the NCWTS with 270 consecutive starts dating back to 2001. The team is planning to run the No. 07 and No 08 Toyota Tundra entries utilizing horsepower from Mark Smith’s Pro Motor Engines.

He built a nice resume running late models in Florida and in his few opportunities last year in the NCWTS he showed speed at a variety of tracks. The International Motorsports Hall of Fame, located on the grounds of Talladega Superspeedway, held its first induction ceremony in 1990, a class that featured motorsports personalities from the world’s many varied series of racing. The Hall of Fame complex features a museum spanning three buildings, with memorabilia dating back to 1902.

Inductions are held nearly every year (no inductions in 1995 and 2010); the number of inductees in each class varies: the inaugural class included 20 racing pioneers, while the upcoming class of 2012 is scheduled to have just three inductees (Richard Childress and NHRA legends John Force and Kenny Bernstein).
NASCAR Hall of Fame honorees William “Bill” France, Junior Johnson and Lee Petty were members of the Hall’s first class in 1990, with Ned Jarrett inducted in 1991 and Bobby Allison, David Pearson and Cale Yarborough inducted in 1993. Richie Evans became a member in 1996, followed by Richard Petty in 1997. Glen Wood was inducted into the Hall in 2002, while William “Bill” France Jr. entered the Hall in 2004; Darrell Waltrip entered in 2005, Dale Earnhardt in 2006, and Bud Moore was inducted in 2009.
Other members of the Hall of Fame include Benny Parsons (1994), Ralph Earnhardt (1997), Roger Penske (1998), Mario Andretti (2000), Alan Kulwicki (2002), Jack Roush (2006) and Maurice Petty (2011).

BB&T and Richard Childress Racing Renew Longtime Partnership for 2012

WELCOME, N.C. (January 24, 2012) – Richard Childress Racing announced today the extension of its long-time partnership with BB&T Corporation (NYSE: BBT) for the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. The full-service financial institution will serve as primary sponsor for five races on the No. 31 Chevrolet and driver Jeff Burton, retaining its status as official bank of the 43-year-old Welcome, N.C.-based organization.

“BB&T has been a great partner of RCR over the years so we’re very pleased to renew our program with them,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “It’s always beneficial working with a partner like BB&T that has strong ties to the area.”

BB&T’s primary race sponsorship occurs within the corporation’s branch footprint, which covers 12 states and Washington D.C. The No. 31 BB&T Chevrolet will debut at Bristol Motor Speedway in March with other appearances coming at Martinsville Speedway and Richmond International Raceway in April, Darlington Raceway along with a special edition co-branded paint scheme with Caterpillar at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race in May. The newly designed burgundy and gray paint scheme will also adorn the No. 31 entry at Dover International Speedway in June.

Statesville, N.C. (January 24, 2012) - Modular construction provider ModSpace will partner with Front Row Motorsports in the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for a multi-race primary sponsorship and season-long associate sponsorship of the No. 38 Ford, driven by David Gilliland. The No. 34 Ford, driven by David Ragan, will also carry an associate sponsorship from ModSpace for the full season.

The new motorsports partnership expands an existing business relationship between the Berwyn, Penn.-based company and Front Row Motorsports owner Bob Jenkins. ModSpace is currently working with Jenkins' quick-service restaurant company to build new Taco Bell/Long John Silver's locations.

Checkers Hockey Team Welcomes NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Dakoda Armstrong, Among Others

Sandusky, Ohio (Jan. 23, 2012) - As the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season-opener at Daytona draws near and the off season comes to a end, ThorSport Racing rookie Dakoda Armstrong's schedule is filling up. On that schedule includes an event this Friday, as Armstrong will join several other NASCAR drivers at the sixth-annual Charlotte Checkers Race Night. The evening's events will include an autograph session for race fans prior to the drop of the puck, along with racing-themed activities for the whole family. Race Night will be a great opportunity for attendees to get close to some of their favorite drivers and enjoy Checkers hockey all in one setting.

"I've been to a few hockey games before, but this will be my first time watching the Checkers," Armstrong said. "Hockey and racing are both about action and everything moves fast, so I'm sure all the hockey and race fans that come will have a great time."

Honoring General Sadler: Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Thomas Sadler, executive director of Speedway Children's Charities, will be the SCC Charlotte Chapter Gala honoree at the event on May 25. The Gala, which serves as the official kick-off for Coca-Cola 600 Race Week festivities at Charlotte Motor Speedway, annually honors an individual whose contributions have made a significant impact on SCC and the lives of children in need across the country.

Renegade Playground Challenge: SCC will host the Renegade Playground Challenge, a 5k obstacle course mud run, on Sept. 29 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Dubbed "Recess. Unsupervised" by its creators, participants in the Renegade Playground Challenge will encounter a mix of running, climbing, crawling, jumping and wading on an off-road course, while also attempting to conquer obstacles such as monkey bars, mud holes, climbing walls and more. Funds raised from the event will benefit SCC.

SCC was founded by O. Bruton Smith, chairman and CEO of Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI) and Sonic Automotive, as a memoriam and legacy to his son, Bruton Cameron Smith, who passed away at a very young age. The first chapter was opened at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the same location where the national offices are today. A chapter of SCC is located at each of the SMI tracks including Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway.

"It is our goal to help as many children as possible live healthy, happy lives and I am proud of what everyone at Speedway Children's Charities has accomplished," said Smith who serves as chairman of Speedway Children's Charities.

Since the organization was founded in 1982, Speedway Children’s Charities has raised more than $47 million and made a difference in the lives of more than 11.3 million children across the United States. The children who have been helped over the last 30 years would fill the stands of the eight SMI tracks more than nine times.

In 2011 alone, nearly 1 million children benefited from the fundraising efforts of the eight chapters of Speedway Children's Charities, with more than $2.5 million donated to 370 non-profit organizations nationwide for the purpose of helping children in need.

“It’s our 30th birthday in 2012 and we want to celebrate,” said Tish Sheets, SCC’s national managing director. “The fundraising efforts of thousands of volunteers and donors over the last three decades have allowed us to help millions of children in need. With all of the buzz surrounding Emily Maynard as the upcoming “Bachelorette,” I have decided to base this week’s NASCAR in Heels on the ever-popular reality TV shows that take up most of the airtime these days.

I am not going to lie, I watch one (or five) too many reality shows, but come on, they are entertaining! There’s just something about watching dysfunctional families, starving strangers, and love-struck singles week after week.

I have complied quite a list of reality shows that fit the personalities, or lifestyles of some of NASCAR’s most popular drivers! Just in case they need something to pass the time, or some off-season plans for next year. I mean they don’t have busy schedules, right?

Now I’m sure all I have to do is mention The Bachelor and most minds will jump to Kasey Kahne. Yes, Kasey would fit into the role very well, but these shows are for entertainment too, so who would be more entertaining? Tony Stewart! I think it would be absolutely hilarious to see Tony try to deal with these emotional and sometimes unstable women! I’m sure there would be a lot of “dead weight” to get rid of there. Who knows? Maybe this is the type of bachelor we need to see, blunt and to the point. Tony just might be the ticket!

Trevor Bayne posted a video on his website of himself cooking with his Easy Bake oven. It was comical, but we’ll just say judging by the skills he has in the video, he could use some practice in the kitchen! I think he needs to spend some time with Rachael Ray, or what the heck? Just put him on Hell’s Kitchen. I’m sure he’d learn a thing or two from Gordon Ramsey!

Vh1’s Charm School is a show whose contestants need help, and have the challenge of, developing proper etiquette. Carl Edwards really needs this one! JUST KIDDING! We all know Carl is the "King of proper etiquette," but there are a few who could use some help in that department. Do the words “Busch” and “Brothers” ring a bell? Enough said.

Dancing and talent shows have gotten very popular over the past few years. My favorite of the bunch? Dancing with the Stars. And who do I think should join the dance party? Ricky Stenhouse Jr! We all saw Ricky dance in the famous Ricky vs. Trevor video. He did win that challenge, and was very entertaining to watch, but some professional help wouldn’t be a bad thing. He’s bound to do well; athletes seem to have an edge when it comes to DWTS, and look how well fellow racer Helio Castroneves did! Wouldn’t that Mirror Ball Trophy look nice next to his Nationwide Series Championship trophy?

Fear Factor recently came back to television, and it is as crazy and gross as ever. The perfect show for the adventurous daredevil Brian Vickers! This guy seems to be willing to tackle anything, so why not make some money off an adrenaline rush? This is something he must enjoy, given everything he’s done.

There are more and more drivers getting married, and during the off-season truck series drivers Matt Crafton and James Buescher both tied the knot. A show like MTV’s Newlyweds would be an excellent match for these couples. Those moments between the new husband and wife can be just priceless, but somewhat embarrassing!

Can you imagine the conversations?

The one reality show I would actually take part in would be The Amazing Race. It’s a once in a lifetime travel opportunity with very unique stops and tasks along the way. Also, to the viewers at home, the antics between the partners can prove to be very amusing! Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus would make quite the pair for this show! They are both driven and know how to win. And, I mean, listen to their radio chatter! That’s only during a race; can you imagine what would come up with these two traveling around the world competing for money?

Kevin Harvick has shown he can pull a good prank, and we have seen proof of this is in the form of pictures and videos, but I think Harvick needs to take part in a show like MTV’s Punk’d. He could take Ashton’s role and pull hidden camera pranks all through the garage and motor home lot!

Matt Kenseth’s sarcastic sense of humor is something that we have seen emerge more and more lately. I really think Matt could give contestants on a show like Last Comic Standing a run for their money! I have said before, he needs a late night TV spot, but this prime time spot would be a nice fit too. These usually aren’t my style of shows, but if Matt were on, I’d be sure to tune in!

Many of the “Docusoap” style reality shows, such as Keeping Up With the Kardashians, are a favorite with many viewers these days. How about a new show, Broadcasting the Buschs? Imagine the frustration these two would build up with a 24/7 camera crew? I know I’ve already mentioned them, but they would be reality TV gold! I’m sure a show like this would be just delightful, or interesting to say the least.

Now I understand these situations are highly unlikely, but it’s always fun to imagine! Wouldn’t this spice up the offseason?!

Busch steps aside to allow other drivers a chance to shine

If you were expecting to see Kyle Busch behind the wheel of the No. 18 Toyota in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this season, it’s time to find another driver to have a love/hate relationship with.

Busch said on Monday that he’s not planning to run any NCWTS races in 2012. He’s instead leaving the ride in the hands of Jason Leffler who moves over from the Nationwide Series. Busch’s plan is to make Kyle Busch Motorsports sustainable to the point that he doesn’t have to climb behind the wheel every week.

Don’t worry folks; you’ll still get to see “Rowdy” behind the wheel in 15 Nationwide races. Sharing the seat with older brother Kurt, Kyle said, “This is definitely a year for excitement both for myself and my brother, but also a year for growth on the Nationwide side and to also translate some of that into our cup teams as well.”

As for what Monster has told the two drivers about staying out of trouble, Kyle remarked that the company hasn’t said anything, “Because frankly I don’t think they care.” That’s a good sign for the young team and the two most temperamental drivers in the garage.

And just what does Coach Gibbs think about this deal? According to him he didn’t have any say in the decision.

Patrick puts IndyCar behind as she transitions to Sprint Cup

Is Danica Patrick really giving up her IndyCar past in favor of her NASCAR future? Based on comments made Monday during the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour Hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway, she’s doing just that. Opening up about her schedule for 2012, Patrick shared that she would skip the Indy 500 to participate in NASCAR’s longest race of the season, the Coca-Cola 600.

There has been much speculation since the announcement came in November that Patrick would be adding the 10 race Sprint Cup commitment to her schedule. Many believed that, if the opportunity presented itself, she would jump on the chance to do double duty for one weekend. But, for Patrick the time commitment and the long Indy 500 qualifications took that off the table since qualifying for Indy would interfere with the Iowa race.

Would she ever race IndyCar again? Although she is focused on NASCAR she says, “That doesn’t mean it’ll never happen again.”

Often criticized for her racy GoDaddy.com advertisements and marketing that paints her as a sex symbol Patrick told members of the media, “I’m a girl, and so to say that I can’t look like a girl doesn’t make any sense.” She went on to point out that it’s not just the GoDaddy marketing that plays to that side of her personality, her other sponsors do so as well.

Patrick has shown much improvement since her first NASCAR events two seasons ago but she still has a long way to go to reach the height of success she dreams of within NASCAR. When asked how she will transition between two different teams during a double duty weekend Patrick commented, “I don’t really know yet, I haven’t had to really transition that much in stock cars…that will be interesting. I hope it will be interesting and seamless. I think more than anything with transitioning it’s gonna have to do with being very busy.”

Patrick will make her Sprint Cup Series debut next month behind the wheel of the No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevy. Will she win? That’s anyone’s guess, but then again who thought Trevor Bayne would win in 2011?

Why I Love NASCAR: NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony by Chief 187™

The aftermath of the Induction of the Third Class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame is fresh. The five newest inductees are aching in their face from smiling so much. The collective family of NASCAR is pleased with their selections and already the movement is on for the next year’s inductees. Before we move on, each man deserves another moment of glory.

So much has been made over the years of Richard Petty’s seven championships in NASCAR’s premiere series and of Dale Earnhardt tying that record, but one crew chief can boast more wins and Cups than these drivers, Dale Inman. As a crew chief he racked up 193 wins and an unparalleled 8 championships. He earned seven of those with Richard Petty and a final one in 1984 with Terry Labonte. Deserving of his spot in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, his place provides younger generations who never witnessed his greatness an education.

Again, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt are well-recognized for their respective seven championships in the NASCAR Cup Series, but inductee Richie Evans’ unbeatable nine championships (8 in a row and all within 13 years) are finally being touted for the phenomenon it was. Known as the “king” of Modified racing Richie Evans takes a deserved spot in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Sporting a name synonymous with racing in NASCAR is Glen Wood who entered with the Class of 2012. His driving for fledgling Wood Brothers Racing set the stage for greatness. His four wins, all at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., and fourteen poles during his active racing career 1953-64, kicked off an era of Wood Brothers’ presence as an indomitable force in NASCAR. What Trevor Bayne was able to accomplish in 2011 with the Wood Brothers was planted with Glen Wood.

Cale Yarborough will forever be known by casual NASCAR fans as the guy who got into the fist fight at the first flag to flag televised Daytona 500 in 1979. But hardcore NASCAR fans know he is the first three- time consecutive Cup winner, a record he earned from 1976-1978 and that stood for thirty years until Jimmie Johnson tied (and eventually surpassed) in 2008. His career spans decades, his victories, 83 of them, and captured poles, 69, impressive, his Cup runs, 3 wins and 3 runner-ups, unheard of, and his personality unmatched. Cale Yarborough is brash, rough, fiery, passionate, and relentless. A true superstar in NASCAR, Cale Yarborough definitely belongs among the elite of NASCAR.

Fittingly, the man Cale Yarborough named “Jaws” for his unstoppable mouth, Darrell Waltrip rounds out the Class of 2012. Sporting three Cups, eighty four wins, and an attitude that was and is at times unbelievable, Waltrip got away with much because of his raw talent and impressive string of wins. Certainly a formidable driver who earned his place, Waltrip now helms the Fox Sports broadcasts of the first half of every season since 2001. 2012 NMPA Convention Award Recognizes PR Professional

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 22, 2012) – Kerry Tharp, NASCAR senior director of competition communications, won the Ken Patterson Helping Others Award on Sunday night during the 2012 National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) Convention at the Embassy Suites in Concord, N.C.

The prestigious award, named after the former director of public relations for Talladega Superspeedway, recognizes a public relations representative in the motorsports industry who has “exhibited the kind, generous qualities that Patterson always demonstrated.”

Affectionately – and appropriately – nicknamed the “Commander,” Tharp leads all competition communications efforts for the NASCAR Integrated Marketing Communications department. Tharp joined NASCAR in 2005 after a 20-year tenure as sports information director at the University of South Carolina.

“Kerry is a great communications professional, but more importantly he is a great human being and that is reflected in this award,” said Brett Jewkes, NASCAR vice president and chief communications officer. “He loves our sport and the people in our industry and it shows in everything he does. We’re very proud of Kerry and grateful to the NMPA for honoring him with this prestigious award.”

Sports has forever fueled Tharp’s passion – and career. For 26 years, Tharp worked in collegiate athletics, starting in the sports information department at his alma mater, Western Kentucky University before moving to graduate school at the University of Tennessee. Following UT, Tharp worked for the University of Oklahoma for four years before moving to South Carolina.

Tharp joined NASCAR as director for the sanctioning body’s licensing office in Charlotte in April of 2005. In February of 2006, he moved to his current role as head of competition communications, based out of NASCAR’s Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. Tharp was promoted to his current title of senior director in October of 2010.

Tony Stewart put together one of the most exciting NASCAR Sprint Cup seasons in recent history, riding a late wave of success to win his third title.

Not only did he top the Sprint Cup field in the championship race, but he has also been named the winner of the NMPA Richard Petty Driver of the Year award.

It’s the third time the membership of the National Motorsports Press Association has voted Stewart as the winner of the award, which has been given since 1969.

The announcement was made Sunday during the NMPA’s annual convention in Charlotte, N.C.

“It’s an honor to have earned the 2011 NMPA Richard Petty Driver of the Year award,” Stewart said. “Everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing took the opportunity we had of being in the Chase and made the most of it. We took each race one at a time and never quit. It made all the difference. This award is as much theirs as it is mine.”

During the 2011 season, Stewart earned a series-leading five wins, all during the Chase for the Sprint Cup. He posted 19 top-10 finishes, nine of them top fives.

Stewart also won this honor in 2002 and 2005.

Also receiving votes were Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch.

Determined by vote of the membership, the Richard Petty Driver of the Year award has been presented annually since 1969 to recognize the season’s most outstanding driver. It is named in honor of NASCAR’s all-time leader in Cup victories.

Five legends inducted into NASCAR Hall of Fame's third class

The NASCAR Hall of Fame hosted its third annual induction ceremony for the NASCAR legends that are now officially Hall of Famers on Friday. The five inductees - Dale Inman, Glen Wood, Richie Evans, Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip - have shaped the sport in ways they never dreamed. It was a night of memories, family and accomplishments, bridging NASCAR's past to its present. The contributions of all five will continue to reverberate into the sport's future.

The night started out with a red carpet entrance and a dinner party for the elite and specially invited guests. During the dinner, the inductees received their Hall of Fame jackets.

It was then time for the actual induction ceremony. An edited version of the event will be broadcast Sunday at 6 p.m. EST on SPEED.

Mike Joy and Krista Voda, FOX News NASCAR commentators, hosted the show. Joy choked up and fought back tears as he mentioned seeing a fan standing in the room wearing a Richie Evans T-shirt.

The late Evans, known as the "King of the Modifieds" for winning nine championship titles, eight of them consecutively, is the first non-stockcar driver to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Tragically, Evans was killed in a crash at Martinsville Speedway in 1985.

Dale Inman

Dale Inman, Richard Petty’s crew chief, was first to receive his ring. He actually won more championships than "The King" did - Inman won an additional championship with Terry Labonte, bringing the total number of titles to eight.

To introduce Inman, Petty took the stage. He spoke highly of his crew chief, who is also his cousin. The two grew up together.

Petty joked, “We started out 75 years ago - Dale did, I’m not quite that old - and again, it shows we’re born in the country with dirt roads, the whole deal, we didn’t know what a race car was.” Yet these two men went on to create a legacy in the world of NASCAR.

“And then my dad started racing,” Petty said, “that kind of took us out all over the country.”

Petty reminded the crowd, "Back then, there was no such thing as a crew chief. You know, they had mechanics, crew mechanics, whatever they wanted to call them, and Dale was basically the first one. He’s the first one that basically started the crew chief operation, because we used to, I guess in 1958 or something, my brother and Dale drove a ’57 Oldsmobile to California, run the race and drove it back home. That was the pit crew, that was the whole deal. And that’s how it started.”

It was fitting that Inman was the first to receive his ring, as he was the first crew chief.

“I’m kind of familiar with this ring,” he said after Petty gave him the ring. “For the last two or three years Richard has put it in my face a bunch of times," Inman said.

The crowd joined in laughter.

Inman went on to explain how Petty and he drove out to California, raced, and drove back.

“He didn’t clear that up very good. Him and Maurice was supposed to drive it, and he was out in the yard showing off and trying to walk on his hands and hurt his shoulder, so I was his substitute driver and I won’t get into that much, but you didn’t race,” Inman said, looking at Petty.

"But you drove the race car to Riverside, California, run a 500-mile road coarse, then got home, rode down in Wilcox, Arizona, had to order a housing from another town, and it come in the bus. I didn’t think this country boy would ever get home.”

Glen Wood

NASCAR is a family sport. The Petty family has a lineup of four generations of racers, but there is another family that started in Daytona back in 1958. These boys were known as the Wood Brothers. Leonard Wood had the privilege to pit the car of his big brother, Glen Wood.

“I was highly honored when Glen asked me to induct him in the NASCAR Hall of Fame,” Leonard said, “and I told him I’d be more than happy to do so. Glen has always been my big brother, and he still is. Glen started racing 61 years ago. Glen and his partner Chris Williams and I were riding down the road. Chris says, what we’ve got to do is get some fame, and I have to say, this is as good as it gets.”

Glen Wood won 96 races in his career, and he has provided opportunities for a lot of young drivers to win their first race. Seventy-five drivers have driven for the Wood Brothers, 20 of which were NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers.

Leonard said, “I would like to point out there’s a lot of Wood Brothers drivers here tonight, and it’s certainly a pleasure to see them. I would like to have the time to tell a story or two of them, but as slow as I talk, we’d be here all night.”

After receiving his ring, Leonard said to the crowd, “This is a long way from the cornfield.”

Glen’s speech was short and sweet. He took the time to thank the many drivers who have raced for him over the years.

"We've had many great drivers," he said, "But David (Pearson inducted in last year's class) and Cale (Yarborough inducted in this class) were the most successful, so I'm proud to join them in the NASCAR Hall of Fame."

Seventeen other drivers who have driven for the team include (but are not limited to): A.J. Foyt, Donnie Allison, Buddy Baker, Kyle Petty, Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler and Trevor Bayne, who is the youngest driver to have won the Daytona 500, last season in 2011.

Richie Evans is recognized as the “King of the Modifieds." He won nine NASCAR Modified titles in a 13-year span; eight of those were in a row from 1978-1985. In his estimated 1,300 starts, it is estimated that he won 475 races. When the current Whelen Modified Tour started in 1985, Evans won 12 races, including four races in five events at Thompson, Connecticut.

Evans was from Rome, New York. He enjoyed living in the quiet deserted parts of Upstate New York. Evans never wanted to move on to the Cup Series - he didn’t feel he needed to. He could’ve and probably would’ve been successful, but he had too much fun in the Modified series; he was winning and making money.

Fellow inductee Darrell Waltrip talked about Evans and congratulated the Evans family.

“I watched Richie win race after race in Martinsville, and in my world, that’s what I call a wheel man, and Richie Evans was the best wheel man I ever saw,” Waltrip said.

Evans lost his life during a practice run in October 1985 at Martinsville. He was 44 years old. His wife Lynn accepted the NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction ring, and gave a short, compelling speech.

"Rich, I've had to do a lot of things for you over the years, but this time I wish you could be here to accept this honor," Lynn Evans said. "I know you're here in spirit as the No. 61 appears often in my life. Even as I checked into the hotel, the number 61 came up."

Evans' car number, No. 61, was retired by the Whelen Modified Tour and is the only number retired in any NASCAR series.

Among her many thanks, Lynn acknowledged the special honor Richie receives as being the first Modified driver to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

"I'd especially like to thank the Hall of Fame voting panel for stepping outside the box and making Rich the first driver inductee not to have raced in NASCAR's top series full-time," she said.

"You have now given hope to thousands of NASCAR competitors throughout the country to maybe someday reach their dream."

Cale Yarborough

In the mid-to late 1970s, Junior Johnson had a strong car and driver to match: Cale Yarborough. Together they won three consecutive championships, a record that was not beaten until Jimmie Johnson came along. By the end of his career, Yarborough won 83 races.

"No one was tougher to beat,” Mike Joy said as he spoke of Yarborough. “There was only one place you’d find Yarborough’s name toward the back - in the phone book!”

Ken Squire inducted Yarborough to the Hall of Fame. Squire said Yarborough was always about believing in oneself, self-reliance, and the imagination to test it, and test it completely. Dream big. That was Cale.

Yarborough tried a lot of different things in life - he was a risk taker. He was the guy to take chances, even if he knew the chances of success were slim to none. He was persistent, he pushed and he prodded.

When Yarborough received his ring, he went on to tell the story of those difficult days when they first started. He compared racing to a big, tall ladder.

“When you begin,” he said, “you start off on the bottom step of that ladder. It’s a long, hard climb to the top. But I feel like tonight, I’m standing on the top step.”

Yarborough told about moving to Charlotte in the early '60s, when he was flat broke and the only thing he had to his name was his daughter and his wife. They were on a tight budget, counting every penny. When they went food shopping one Saturday night, they calculated everything they bought so they could afford it. Then, just as they were about to check out, he saw large cans of black eyed peas for sale for 10 cents a can. He talked with his wife about it, and they came up with an agreement. They returned all the food in the cart, and went back and bought every can of black eyed peas.

“We had black eyed peas for breakfast, for dinner, and for supper, a long time,” Yarborough said.

He went on to thank all the people that made it possible for him climb that long, tough ladder. He especially thanked the Wood Brothers.

“I am so honored and pleased to be inducted in the same class with Glen Wood. It’s just great, it turned out right,” he said.

“Then there is Leonard Wood. Leonard, you won’t be far behind us, bud. You deserve every bit of it.”

Darrell Waltrip

Darrell Waltrip - "DW" - has had a tremendous amount of success in his many years of racing, including three championships and 84 wins, and a post-racing broadcast career on top of that.

Waltrip's NASCAR career started in 1972, and he was fast and furious from the start. Yarborough went on to give him the nickname, "Jaws." It was the same year the movie came out.

Waltrip chose Jeff Hammond, FOX NASCAR commentator and Waltrip's former crew chief, to induct him into the Hall of Fame. Hammond worked for Yarborough, Junior Johnson, and eventually he worked for Waltrip as well.

At the end of Yarborough’s season in 1980, when he decided to cut his schedule and race part time, Johnson hired a new driver to the team: Waltrip. Hammond told the audience that he wondered, “Why in the world did it have to be Darrell Waltrip to walked through that door of the shop?

"Darrel knows this - OK, I didn’t like him, and I didn’t want him to be our driver,” Hammond admitted. “Part of it was because he was beating us on the track more frequently, but the other part was, and you’ve heard this before, he would never shut up. He was always running his mouth.”

Hammond spoke of the hard times they as a team faced. It wasn’t until Johnson came in to tell them they would have to figure out how to work together, or they would find themselves in the unemployment line together. That straightened up their act.

In 1981, Hammond and Waltrip won 12 races and the championship; in 1982, with a new team, they went on to win 12 more races and the second championship. They won their third championship in 1985, making up a huge points deficit to overtake Bill Elliott.

Waltrip was named the Driver of the Decade: from 1977 to 1987, he never finished a season lower than 5^th in points.

After Hammond gave Waltrip his Hall of Fame ring, Waltrip said, “I’ve got to straighten something out before we can get to any of this other stuff. It wasn’t that I talked that much. Those other guys didn’t talk at all. So it just looked like I was talking a lot. I had to fill in the blanks. If there was something that need to be explained, "DW" explained it. So it just looked like I talked a lot, but honestly, I didn’t. I just want you to know that, for you new fans that have listened to all of this.”

Waltrip went on to give a 24-minute thank you speech. He talked about his experience and his journey. He thanked his family, and that is what made him emotional. His daughter and her husband returned from Brazil this past week to tell him he was going to be a grandfather.

That’s not all the good news "DW" got this week: his youngest daughter, who has been in the Philippines, called him earlier in the week and apologized to her dad for not being able to attend the ceremony, but it was impossible for her to make it. He told her he understood. On Thursday, when he got to Charlotte and checked into his hotel, he opened the door to his room and standing in front of him was his daughter. She flew 25 hours to see him be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. "DW" was not shy to cry in front of the audience and on television.

The show ended as it started, emotionally. These five men all had dreams to win races, but none of them ever thought their racing careers would get so big. In the end, it's all about working together and believing in yourself. It's about putting God first and committing to your family. All of the Hall of Fame Inductees have had lifelong marriages, with a partner who has helped them get ahead in life. Without these women, they may not have been there last night to receive the greatest gift to show the accomplishments of their careers.

RAB Racing To Attempt Sprint Cup Series Debut in 54th Daytona 500 with American Ethanol, Kenny Wallace

CONCORD, N.C. (January 21, 2012) - RAB Racing with Brack Maggard announced today that they will attempt to make their NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut in the 54th-annual Daytona 500 on Feb. 26, with driver Kenny Wallace behind the wheel of their No. 09 American Ethanol Toyota Camry.

"Corn farmers are excited to continue our relationship with RAB Racing and Kenny Wallace in 2012," said Garry Niemeyer, National Corn Growers Association president. "Kenny is a fan favorite and one of the most visible drivers in the sport. He has been an outspoken supporter of ethanol and Sunoco Green E15. He comes from the Midwest, so he truly appreciates the important role corn farmers play in providing consumers with a fuel that is made in America and provides jobs here at home."

"American Ethanol is excited to enter the racing season with Kenny Wallace behind the wheel as a spokesman for our industry," said Tom Buis, CEO of Growth Energy. "He has a great connection with the fans and he can help tell the story of how using ethanol in our fuel creates jobs, fosters energy security and cleans the air."

With Wallace behind the wheel of their NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota in 2011, the No. 09 team finished seventh in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver championship standings, a career-best for the Concord, N.C.-based team, after posting 11 top-10 finishes.

Wallace will attempt to make his 11th Daytona 500 start. His last start in the Great American Race came in 2008, when he raced his way into the starting lineup via an eighth-place finish in the first Gatorade Duel.

Beat adds a Southern California flare to the Miss Sprint Cup lineup. The former Fuel TV on-air talent and extreme sports reporter grew up racing motocross bikes and was a big supporter of her brother’s pursuit of a professional racing career. When she isn’t at the racetrack, Beat enjoys surfing, working out and honing her culinary skills with healthy recipes. After receiving her communications degree from the University of San Diego, Beat pursued her dream of a career in broadcasting, eventually becoming the youngest credentialed reporter in X-Games history.

Go Green Racing Signs Paul and Tim Andrews; Forms Cup Team

Go Green Racing is excited to announce the addition of Paul and Tim Andrews to an already impressive list of talented crew members to Go Green Racing for the 2012 NASCAR season. Paul Andrews, a former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Crew Chief, will lead the No. 19 Go Green Racing Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 16th.

Bristol Motor Speedway will also mark the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series attempt for Tim Andrews.

Following Bristol, the team expects to compete in an additional ten NSCS races.

“Tim proved to us last year that he can get a car into the show, and at this level, that is what it is all about,” said Archie St. Hilaire, Team Owner for Go Green Racing. “The chemistry between Paul and Tim is outstanding. I think that Tim has shown us that he deserves a shot and I have always been a
believer in giving a guy an opportunity.”

Tim Andrews is also scheduled to compete in select NASCAR Nationwide Series races as driver of the No. 37 Go Green Racing Ford Mustang. Calling the shots as crew chief on the No. 37 will be Dave Ingram. Ingram joins Go Green Racing after serving as crew chief for MacDonald Motorsports
last season.

“I feel very fortunate to get this opportunity,” said Tim Andrews. “I have dreamed about being in a Cup car and to do it with my father’s help is unbelievable. I believe in him and he believes in me, it just gives us that much more confidence.”

Paul Andrews is no stranger at Bristol Motor Speedway. As a NSCS crew chief, Paul has earned one pole, two wins, and numerous top-five finishes at the famous half-mile track.

“I am really looking forward to this opportunity with Go Green Racing,” said Paul Andrews, also a Maine native. “I was able to work with them at the end of the year and was very impressed with their
operations. To be able to work with Timmy for his first Cup race is very special to me.” St. Hilaire also has big expectations for the 2012 season.

“Bringing on quality guys to Go Green Racing like Paul (Andrews) and Dave (Ingram) is huge for ourorganization,” St. Hilaire said. “I feel that Paul, Dave, and Clinton (Cram) as our three crew chiefs will bring our entire program to the next level.”

Go Green Racing has purchased their NSCS cars from Roush Fenway Racing and will run the Roush/Yates FR9 motor at all 2012 Cup races. The entire team has been working hard to get all three teams prepared for 2012 at their new shop in Mooresville, NC which will accommodate the
team’s expanded growth.

Ride-Watch 2012: Pippa Mann

One driver who is still without a ride for the 2012 IZOD IndyCar season is Pippa Mann. Not quiet about it, Mann’s Twitter page - @PippaMann - is lighting up with, in her words, “shameless and obnoxious self-promotion”, retweets from her supporters, and suggestions that there is a potential team for her in the works, but nothing she can directly comment on yet.

The thing is, there are several drivers looking for rides and a lesser number of available teams. More than a dozen drivers that desire a full time team opportunity at the IZOD IndyCar level are still pounding the proverbial pavement in search of the elusive backing that will allow each of them a full time position as a 2012 season IZOD IndyCar driver. So what makes Pippa Mann a good choice for those teams who may be considering her as a full time driver in 2012?

5 Reasons:

1. Pippa Mann is one tough lady; last August during practice in New Hampshire Mann lost control of her car under slippery track conditions. The data recorder in the car showed the impact of Mann’s car into the wall came with a force of more than 100 Gs. She walked away from the car under her own power and tweeted about a concussion, a swollen ankle, and an injured knee. Not until three days later was it confirmed that she also suffered an end plate fracture to her 7^th cervical vertebrae. She returned to the car less than a month later for testing and subsequent racing at Kentucky Speedway.

2. Her previous competition record shows Mann to be a tough competitor as well. In 2009, Mann’s freshman year in the Indy Lights series, her 15 starts resulted in three finishes within the top ten. Her second year showed a definite improvement as she took the top spot on the podium in one race, started from the pole position on three occasions, became the first woman to start from the pole position in a race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and led 102 laps in the 12 races in which she took part. 2011 found Mann participating in her first Indianapolis 500 race; after starting in the 32^nd position she was able to improve her place to 20^th before the closing laps of the race.

3. She has the strong desire to succeed at the IndyCar level. Pippa Mann makes it obvious that she wants a full time IZOD IndyCar ride in 2012. Her Twitter biography states, “Working hard on getting out there full time in an IndyCar in 2012!!! #LetsGoRacing!!! :)” She tweets daily – sometimes hourly – about her efforts to secure a team to call home. Recent comments indicate that she is in communication with at least one team, but not close enough to a deal to publicly announce who may be expressing their interest.

4. Mann’s racing experience is varied and can only serve to better prepare her for a potential full time IZOD IndyCar seat. Since 2003 Mann has gained experience in the Formula Renault 2.0 British and French divisions, the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, and Porsche Carrera Cup racing in addition to Indy Lights and the IZOD IndyCar series experience she has had in the U.S.

5. Pippa Mann comes with a fan base. In a time when IndyCar is attempting to bring back the glory days of packed stands, sold-out events, and a solid fan base, any driver who can honestly say they have a group of loyal and staunch supporters of their endeavors in racing is not a bad person to bring on board. So-called “Mann-iacs” and “Pippa-ites” have offered their loyalties to whatever sponsor she lands, they spread the word regarding their beliefs that Mann deserves a shot at a full time IZOD IndyCar ride, and one supporter offered to chain himself to the fence at Indianapolis Motor Speedway until a ride and sponsor is found for Mann.

When a team and sponsor are considering a driver to bring on board, it comes down to whether the team and sponsor combination believes that the driver is a good fit with the ideals they want to represent, whether the driver is competitive, and whether the driver is marketable. Personable, attractive, and outgoing, Mann does not seem to have an issue with the marketability. Her record in the Indy Lights Series along with her desire to race – and win – goes a long way toward being competitive. She seems to recognize that everything she says reflects upon her character and appears unlikely to make comments or act in ways that would be detrimental to the image of herself, a team, or sponsor.

Early on Friday, Mann stated, “If our potential sponsor does come through in time, I think a lot of you will be very surprised and happy with what we've got going on.” She is training as if she will be driving for the season. Her right hand, badly injured in the wreck at the 2011 season finale, has healed to the point that she can comfortably grip the steering wheel, and she has been cleared to drive should the opportunity arise.

In her owns words, the number one reason Pippa Mann should be given a chance with a team for a full time ride this season is, “…because I believe in working hard to achieve your goals, not in short cuts, or taking the easy route! Repaying the faith put in me to give me this chance would be the most important thing to me - both on and off the track!”

As Mann tweeted on January 16th, “You never know until you know, and I know more than anyone that time is short, but there are reasons behind continuing hopefulness...”

Motorsports Media Flock to Charlotte for 30th Annual NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. (Jan. 20, 2012) – More than 230 motorsports journalists from around the globe will descend upon the heart of NASCAR country on Monday for the 30^th annual NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway. What started as a 1983 “experiment” with a handful of media that struggled to fill one charter bus, the four-day Tour has evolved into the nation’s premier preseason media event in professional sports.

“The NASCAR Sprint Media Tour is four days of non-stop news and a great way for fans to hear the latest about their favorite teams just a few weeks before the start of the season,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “It’s the Tour’s 30^th year and it’s stronger than ever, with a record number of media coming to this year’s event that features more than 20 stops throughout the four days. We’re excited to host to such a fantastic and meaningful event.”

The NASCAR Sprint Media Tour began in 1983 as a way to garner publicity for Charlotte Motor Speedway and NASCAR at a spot on the calendar that was traditionally slow on NASCAR news. The brainchild of then Charlotte Motor Speedway publicists Ed Clark and Bob Kelly, the concept came from the now defunct Atlantic Coast Conference media tour, where media were bused to different campuses during late summer in advance of football season.

Clark, now president and general manager of Atlanta Motor Speedway, remembers getting NASCAR teams to agree to host media that first year was “like pulling teeth,” but by the end of the first Tour, the teams that weren’t on the itinerary, were calling to reserve spots for the following year.

“When we did it the first year, the Tour was really more of an experiment,” said Clark. “No one knew how many media would come and we struggled to fill one charter bus. I don’t even think we did. I certainly wouldn’t have envisioned the Tour going this long and never would have envisioned it becoming such a critical component to garner exposure, not just for Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the entire sport of NASCAR.”

This year, representing countries as far as the Netherlands and Germany as well as states throughout America, credentialed participants will preview the 2012 racing season with race shop tours, interviews with drivers, crew chiefs and team owners, as well as announcements from teams in NASCAR’s top divisions and the NHRA thanks to support from Sprint and NASCAR.

More than 20 stops will keep the participating media busy over the four-day tour including visits to Hendrick Motorsports, Michael Waltrip Racing, Richard Childress Racing and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions Stewart-Haas Racing, plus Joe Gibbs Racing and Roush-Fenway Racing are among the many teams that will also be making announcements.

OneMain Financial Team Set to Compete for NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship in 2012

WELCOME, N.C. (January 20, 2012) - When the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series season kicks off in late February, Elliott Sadler will once again be driving the No. 2 OneMain Financial Chevrolet. This season however, Sadler joins forces with Richard Childress Racing and looks to add to the organization's five Nationwide Series championships.

Announced in 2011, Kevin Harvick Inc. merged with RCR on the Nationwide Series programs, moving teams and much of its equipment to the Welcome, N.C., shop. OneMain Financial will continue the sponsorship of the No. 2 Chevrolet at RCR for a total of 29 Nationwide Series events during the 2012 season, marking the company's ninth season with a strong presence in the sport. For generations, OneMain Financial has provided local, one-on-one, personalized service and affordable solutions to customer borrowing needs.

Sadler, an Emporia, Va., native, notched 12 top-five and 24 top-10 finishes, as well as five pole awards last season in the 2011 Nationwide Series season. He finished second in the driver point standings in his first full-time Nationwide Series season since 1998, falling just 45 points short of the championship.

"It is such a great opportunity to compete for such an accomplished organization like Richard Childress Racing," said Sadler. "To have an organization like OneMain Financial support me on and off the track again this year really makes me eager to get back to the track to compete for the Nationwide Series championship. We came up short last year, finishing second in the points, but I know we have all the parts in place to win this year with this RCR team."

Luke Lambert has been tapped as crew chief for the OneMain Financial team for the season. Lambert served as interim crew chief for the No. 31 Sprint Cup Series team for 17 races last season with driver Jeff Burton, leading the team to two top-five and five top-10 finishes. Lambert, 29, joined RCR in 2005, serving as the team engineer for the No. 31 program from 2008 - 2010. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University in 2005.

In addition to the sponsorship with Sadler, OneMain Financial will serve as the primary sponsor on RCR's No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Kevin Harvick in the Nationwide Series event at Texas Motor Speedway in November. Harvick is scheduled to share the No. 33 Nationwide Series ride with teammates Paul Menard and Brendan Gaughan for the 2012 season. OneMain Financial will also sponsor Joey Coulter's No. 22 Camping World truck at the fall Texas race.

Turn One Racing to Make NASCAR Sprint Cup Debut at Phoenix

China Grove, NC (January 20, 2012) – Turn One Racing announced today that they will field a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car in 2012, starting with the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday, March 4th. The team is building on the experience earned over the last three years of competition in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, where the team earned a ninth place finish in the 2011 standings with driver Cole Whitt.

“This is a great opportunity for Turn One Racing,” said Team Owner, Stacy Compton. “It has always been our objective to grow the team and this is just the next step in that plan. We have a great group of partners behind us and feel like we are taking all the right steps to build a very competitive Sprint Cup team.”

Compton’s team has purchased cars from Richard Childress Racing and plans are in the works to race eight to ten events in their freshman year. The team will attempt the remaining races, excluding the 200-lap Daytona 500. “We have partnered with one of our long-time supporters to run a handful of races this year. We’re also working on additional sponsorship that would enable us to run more races throughout the year.”

The team is also in the process of putting together a full season program for the No. 60 truck. The driver, crew chief, and sponsor lineup for both teams will be announced at a later date.

Busch and Busch Team Up: Brilliant or blunder, you decide

On Thursday it was announced the Kurt Busch would join younger brother Kyle’s Nationwide Series team for a partial schedule in 2012. Teaming up with Monster Energy Drink and driving the No. 54, the Busch boys will split the ride as they work toward the 2012 Nationwide Owner’s Championship.

This is either the most brilliant plan for Nationwide domination or the beginning of the end for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Brilliant you say?

If you have to question the brilliance of this pairing perhaps it’s time to have your head examined. Can you think of two drivers more competitive and passionate about winning? Do any other names come to mind when you think of the phrase “second place is the first loser?” These guys demand perfection from their team every time they strap in behind the wheel. But it’s not just team perfection they are after, it’s personal perfection. They aren’t about having a “solid day”. For Kurt and Kyle Busch the only solid day is one where they are in victory lane celebrating.

Between them are 54 Nationwide Series victories and thousands of miles logged behind the wheel. Although the majority of the wins (51) belong to Kyle, Kurt is no slouch. In only 12 starts the older Busch has found victory lane three times in the series.

With numbers like that the team is a shoe-in for the Owner’s Championship, especially when you consider Roush-Fenway Racing won’t have their ace Carl Edwards racking up the wins. Yes, my friends, I think I’ll put my money on the Busch boys to take home the NNS title in 2012…that is, if they don’t self-destruct first.

Self-destruction, but you just said…

Yes, I just called the move brilliant, but it will only work if the two drivers are able to keep that fire in their bellies reined in. There’s no denying that both of the Busch’s are known for their short fuses and nasty tempers. They’ve been in the spotlight more in the last nine months than ever before, and not for the right reasons. From Kyle’s speeding ticket, pit road run in with Harvick and his blatant wrecking of Hornaday, to Kurt’s brutal words with his team over the radio and that now infamous YouTube video, 2011 was not a good season for either in the court of public opinion.

Although both have made public apologies for their actions last year and have put on the face of a changed man, we won’t really know if it’s an act or reality until tensions start running high. Will one crack under the pressure? Will the sibling rivalry we’ve been hearing about for years rear its ugly head? Will sponsors jump ship the first time one does something outside the rules, or will it take multiple infractions? If the worst happened, like it nearly did in 2011 for Kyle, would he be able to rebound? Will Kurt’s past transgressions haunt him each time a lugnut gets dropped on pit road or a reporter asks a question he doesn’t like?

I’ll leave it up to you to decide where the chips will fall come November. There’s only one thing left to say to the drivers and that’s Welcome to the NASCAR Nationwide Series, Kyle Busch Motorsports. And to the fans out there, it doesn’t matter which side of the argument you lie on, let’s remember that this is the greatest sport on the planet and it takes personalities of all types to make it work. I for one am excited for this venture, but you know me, I’m a glutton for punishment!
