Salisbury, N.C. Woman Awarded $25,000 Brienne Davis Memorial Scholarship to NASCAR Technical Institute

PHOENIX, AZ (Feb. 18, 2010) – Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Foundation has awarded Bobbie Newgard of Salisbury, N.C. the $25,000 Brienne Davis Memorial Scholarship, made possible through the donation of NASCAR team owner and chairman of Penske Corporation, Roger Penske.

The Penske award is part of the Brienne Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund – a scholarship program designed to help women gain the education they need to pursue careers in the automotive industry. Davis, a UTI alumnus who went on to become a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series official, died tragically in 2008.

Newgard, whose love of racing stems from working as a pit crew member for a Pro-Stock team at NASCAR-sanctioned Thompson Speedway in Connecticut, is using the scholarship to help fund her education at NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, N.C.

“I hoped for an opportunity to receive a technical education and continue a tradition of excellence in the great sport of racing,” said Newgard. “The Brienne Davis scholarship will enable me to honor her memory and fulfill my dream of becoming a NASCAR official.”

“Brienne Davis was a remarkable person who continues to inspire women who seek a technical education,” said Veronica Meury, vice president and executive director of the UTI Foundation. “The Foundation is excited to announce the newest scholarship winner and to be associated with the Brienne Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund. Programs like this help deserving women pursue their dreams of a successful career in the automotive industry.”

In addition to the $25,000 scholarship, the UTI Foundation will also be awarding three $10,000 Brienne Davis Memorial Scholarships to women who will be attending the UTI Avondale Ariz., Glendale Heights, Ill. and Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. campuses.

“The Brienne Davis Scholarship Fund is a great program that continues to help women achieve their automotive career goals through the UTI curriculum,” said Odis Lloyd, managing director, NASCAR Automotive Group. “There is no limit to what aspiring and talented females like Newgard can achieve in the automotive industry and the sport of NASCAR.”
