NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee spotlight: Fred Lorenzen

When it comes to being a NASCAR driver, Fred Lorenzen wasn't around for very long and was a part-time driver for pretty much all of his NASCAR career, but he got a lot done in a small number of races during NASCAR's early years. In his 158 starts at the Cup level between 1956 and 1972, Lorenzen scored 26 wins, 75 top-fives and 84 top-10 finishes.

As a matter of fact, Lorenzen dominated during his stints at the racetrack. In 1964, he finished 13th in the season-ending points standings even though he entered only 16 events on the 62 race schedule. He may have only ran 16 races, but that was enough to claim eight wins that year, five of them coming in consecutive starts.

His win total the following season was cut in half, as he won four times in 17 starts, but two of those wins came in two of NASCAR's biggest races -- the Daytona 500 and the World (now Coca-Cola) 600.
