Movie Review: ESPN Ultimate NASCAR Vo. 5: The Families

I love learning and watch a lot of documentaries. I’ve watched a lot about NASCAR this past year to help me better understand the sport. Now that those NASCAR drivers are on a racing break and our stories are limited, I’ve decided I’d like to write a review on a documentary that touched my heart and although it’s been a month since I’ve seen it, I still think about it.

“ESPN Ultimate NASCAR Volume 5: The Families”

This 120-minute documentary covers the most famous families in NASCAR, giving you a very personal and intimate look into the lives of the Pettys, the Allisons and the Earnhardts.

All three are legendary families in the sport and all three families have faced triumph and a tragedy, or two.

Richard Petty, “The King” of NASCAR and his son Kyle have raced each other and the day was soon coming for Kyle to be able to race with his son, Adam. The opportunity was cut short one May day in 2001, when Adam was in a car wreck at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway when he was testing.

Bobby Allison raced against his son Davey and his younger son Clifford, who was hoping to follow his dad and brother’s footsteps. Unfortunately, he lost his both sons, Clifford crashed while racing and Davey was in a freak helicopter accident.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. raced with the Intimidator during his rookie season and hoped to race more often with the man he called “dad.” He lost him during the Daytona 500 in 2001.

This documentary was one of many that will give you a deeper perspective and a lasting impression.
