Deuces Wild at PIR
Are you a fan of Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski? Then look no further. Deuces Wild is your source for all things related to the drivers of the “Blue Deuce” and the “Double Deuce” for Penske Racing. Deuces Wild will look at any major developments among the team and recap each Sprint Cup Series event for 2011.
Brad Keselowski – Blue Deuce (#2)
If you are a fan of Kurt Busch it’s going to take some time to get used to seeing someone else behind the wheel of your beloved #2 Miller Lite Dodge. This season the "blue deuce" is piloted by Brad Keselowski who is in his second full time season with Penske. Keselowski, who has one Sprint Cups Series victory to his name, also drives the #22 in the Nationwide Series and owns the Brad Keselowski Racing Camping World Truck Series Team.
Keselowski started Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 from the ninth position driving a brand new chassis, PRS-736. In his previous three starts at PIR in the Cup Series the highest BK had finished was 16th. Sunday, Keselowski looked to recover from his poor finish in Saturday’s Nationwide Series event and bring the “Blue Deuce” home with a strong finish.
Keselowski’s day wasn’t stellar but it wasn’t horrible either. Starting off with a strong car, Keselowski later complained that the Miller Lite Dodge was too tight. With each trip to pit road the team adjusted hoping to fix the ill-handling machine. Keselowski sustained minor damage in the lap 67 incident that took out several high profile drivers, including pole sitter Carl Edwards, but was able to stay within the top 20 most of the day. Although he found himself a lap down on two occasions, the Lucky Dog got him back in contention.
Keselowski earned his best finish at PIR with a 15th.
Side note: Keselowski, the defending Nationwide Series Champion, finished 34th in Saturday’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200.
Kurt Busch – Double Deuce (#22)
Trading in his can of Miller Lite for a bottle of motor oil and a trip to the gas pump is Kurt Busch. The former driver of the #2 moved to the #22 for the 2011 Sprint Cup Series season. Sure the number, logo on the car, and the firesuit are different but behind the wheel is the same Kurt Busch.
Coming off a strong weekend in Daytona Busch hoped to put the new “double deuce” in victory lane at Phoenix. Starting from the front row Busch’s car was strong and was able to contend for the lead on several occasions, however as the track changed the attitude of the #22, along with it’s driver, changed too. Unhappy with how the team adjusted and how the car performed Busch wasn’t shy about sharing his thoughts with his crew chief or his team owner.
Although unhappy with the overall performance of the “double deuce”, Kurt Busch ended the day in eight position and led a total of 31 laps.
Busch sits second in points just three behind younger brother Kyle.
The circuit heads to Las Vegas this weekend for the Kobalt Tools 400.
