This Week in NASCAR History 8/14-8/21

August 13th, 2000: Steve Park takes the win in an upset at Watkins Glen to score his first career Cup Series victory. Top contenders Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon collide going through the esses on lap 1 taking both out of contention-opening the door for Park and others.

August 15th, 1961: NASCAR President Bill France bans Curtis Turner and Tim Flock "for life" from all NASCAR racing. Turner and Flock are the only 2 drivers who refuse to give up on forming a drivers union. Both would later be reinstated by France.

The restrictor plate, a simple innovation to slow down the cars, still a controversy.

August 16th, 1970: Restrictor plates make their first ever appearance in a Nascar race when the Cup series uses them at Michigan. Charlie Glotzbach takes the win in a winged Dodge Daytona.
A photo finish at the Talladega 500 was overshadowed by the passed of Tiny Lund.

August 17th, 1975: Buddy Baker beats Richard Petty in a photo finish to win the Talladega 500, an event marred by the death of DeWayne "Tiny" Lund-who dies from injuries suffered in a multicar crash on lap 7.

August 18th, 1991: Dale Jarrett beats Davey Allison in a photo finish at Michigan to score his first career Cup Series victory.

August 19th, 1950: Curtis Turner takes the pole for the first Southern 500 at Darlington with a blistering speed of 82.034 mph. (note: current qualifying record is 179.574 mph-on the same track-we've come a long way)

August 20th: It’s a pretty quiet day in the NASCAR community. Excluding the first 3 races, every race run on this date has been at Michigan International Speedway.
