Speedway Children’s Charities Marks 30 Years of Helping Children With Year-Long Birthday Celebration
Motorcycle Giveaway, Gala to Honor General Sadler, More to Take Place in 2012
CONCORD, N.C. (Jan. 24, 2012) – Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) is turning 30 in 2012 and the organization will commemorate the birthday milestone with a year-long celebration. Throughout the year SCC will recognize the impact its volunteers, donors and staff have had on millions of children over the last three decades and celebrate its achievements through a full slate of activities, including the following:
Honoring General Sadler: Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Thomas Sadler, executive director of Speedway Children's Charities, will be the SCC Charlotte Chapter Gala honoree at the event on May 25. The Gala, which serves as the official kick-off for Coca-Cola 600 Race Week festivities at Charlotte Motor Speedway, annually honors an individual whose contributions have made a significant impact on SCC and the lives of children in need across the country.
Motorcycle Giveaway: SCC will raffle off a new custom-painted racing-themed 2011 Harley Davidson Fatboy motorcycle, featuring art work by NASCAR artist Sam Bass. Starting Jan. 29, raffle tickets can be purchased exclusively online for $10 each at www.speedwaycharities.org. The raffle winner will be drawn at the Renegade Playground Challenge, hosted by SCC on Sept. 29 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This will be SCC’s final Racing for Kids motorcycle raffle, in celebration of the organization’s 30th birthday.
Carl Edwards as National Spokesperson: Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will serve as the 2012 national spokesperson for SCC, marking the fourth consecutive year in which he has held the position.“I’m humbled to be the national spokesperson for Speedway Children’s Charities again this year,” said Edwards. “I am amazed every year at the number of great supporters and people who donate to this wonderful cause. I hope this year we can do as much as we’ve been able to do in the past, and I really look forward to it.”
Renegade Playground Challenge: SCC will host the Renegade Playground Challenge, a 5k obstacle course mud run, on Sept. 29 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Dubbed "Recess. Unsupervised" by its creators, participants in the Renegade Playground Challenge will encounter a mix of running, climbing, crawling, jumping and wading on an off-road course, while also attempting to conquer obstacles such as monkey bars, mud holes, climbing walls and more. Funds raised from the event will benefit SCC.

SCC was founded by O. Bruton Smith, chairman and CEO of Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI) and Sonic Automotive, as a memoriam and legacy to his son, Bruton Cameron Smith, who passed away at a very young age. The first chapter was opened at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the same location where the national offices are today. A chapter of SCC is located at each of the SMI tracks including Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway.
"It is our goal to help as many children as possible live healthy, happy lives and I am proud of what everyone at Speedway Children's Charities has accomplished," said Smith who serves as chairman of Speedway Children's Charities.
Since the organization was founded in 1982, Speedway Children’s Charities has raised more than $47 million and made a difference in the lives of more than 11.3 million children across the United States. The children who have been helped over the last 30 years would fill the stands of the eight SMI tracks more than nine times.
In 2011 alone, nearly 1 million children benefited from the fundraising efforts of the eight chapters of Speedway Children's Charities, with more than $2.5 million donated to 370 non-profit organizations nationwide for the purpose of helping children in need.
“It’s our 30th birthday in 2012 and we want to celebrate,” said Tish Sheets, SCC’s national managing director. “The fundraising efforts of thousands of volunteers and donors over the last three decades have allowed us to help millions of children in need. We want to recognize the dedication and support of everyone involved in Speedway Children’s Charities since 1982 with a full-year celebration.”
“We have been able to help an amazing number of children over the past 30 years," said Gen. Sadler. "It is wonderful to see how much Speedway Children's Charities has grown since its beginning and as we continue to provide assistance, in many ways, to children in need across the country, I can never thank those enough who have helped us throughout the years."
