Skirts and Scuffs Predictions: Paula Thompson chooses the champs
After a short and exciting off-season, it’s time for Daytona and a new round of NASCAR action – that means it’s also time for a new batch of championship picks.
In 2011, I got a trifecta of sorts: my picks of Austin Dillon (Camping World Truck Series), Elliott Sadler (Nationwide Series) and Kevin Harvick (Sprint Cup Series) actually finished one (Dillon)-two (Sadler)-three (Harvick) in their respective series. With those results, I’m feeling pretty good about these picks for 2012.
Camping World Truck Series – Ron Hornaday Jr.
At age 53, Hornaday Jr. is not about to slow down – he was in the running for the 2011 title until his “incident” with Kyle Busch at Texas in November. He’ll move to Joe Denette Motorsports in 2012 and will add a few more wins to his all-time total before the season is over – as well as a fifth Truck Series championship.
Nationwide Series – Elliott Sadler
Sadler returns for 2012, moving to Richard Childress Racing after the merger of Kevin Harvick Incorporated with RCR. He failed to post any wins in 2011, but his consistent finishes in the top 10 (24 in 34 races) led to a strong second-place showing in points. It’s only a matter of time before Sadler wins a race, as well as a championship, and it will likely be in 2012.
Sprint Cup Series – Tony Stewart
Stewart’s Chase run amazed even a long-time fan like me, and he seems the heir-apparent to Jimmie Johnson’s “horseshoe.” His streak of luck continued into the offseason, and he’s got the big “mo” (momentum) on his side going into the 2012 season. One monkey he’ll need to get off his back: that first Daytona 500 win – but if that goes well, watch out for Smoke!
