Third-generation IndyCar driver Marco Andretti has to follow in some serious family footsteps: his
grandfather is the legendary Mario Andretti, winner in IndyCar, NASCAR and Formula 1 among other series; his father, Michael, was successful in IndyCar as both a driver and an owner; and his uncle, John, is a veteran of IndyCar, NASCAR and NHRA Drag Racing. Get to know the next generation of IndyCar royalty in this week’s Fast Facts.

  • Marco Michael Andretti was born March 13, 1987 in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. He started racing karts at age nine, and in 2003 at age 16 competed in the Barber Formula Dodge Eastern Championship, winning eight races. The following season he won the Barber National and Southern class championships.
  • In 2005, Andretti raced in the Star Mazda Series and Firestone Indy Lights Series; in Indy Lights, he won three times in six races and finished 10th in points even though he started just half of the series’ races.
  • Andretti moved up to the IZOD IndyCar Series with his father’s team, Andretti Green Racing (now Andretti Autosport), in 2006, winning his first event in August at Sonoma Raceway and capturing the series’ Rookie of the Year honors. He also finished second in the Indianapolis 500 that season, and won the Rookie of the Year for that race.
  • Andretti has won two IZOD IndyCar races – the other win coming at Iowa in 2011 – and has had podium finishes in the Indy 500 two other times – third place in both 2008 and 2010.
