Outlaws Young Gun Pittman Takes Night 2 of The Boot Hill Showdown

Dodge City was true to her hard core roots. It was brutally hot with hotter wind gusts. And she promised to show no mercy to the Outlaws that had taken her measure the night before. To the very end it seemed that the new Sheriff would take her measure again, but with a late race caution she laid her trump card on the table and he was blindsided by a flat right rear tire under caution. That cleared the way for yet another young gun to step up to the plate. A young gun in a fast car with no fear in his heart, and when the dust cleared Daryn Pittman was standing at the top of Boot Hill with the smoking gun.

Tonight’s final race of the Boot Hill Showdown saw 22 cars take time. The track record set by Donny Schatz in 2005 of 12.277 seconds would stand with Quick Time going to Australian champion James McFadden who turned a lap of 12.955 seconds or approximately 104.207 mph. The rest of the top five qualifiers were Paul McMahan, Tim Kaeding, Cody Darrah and Sammy Swindell.

The track was heavy and wet - just the opposite of the last night’s surface. It slowed the lap times and made for a slower pace to the evening. The three heat races had clear cut winners again with the track being difficult to pass on. Taking the checkers in the heats were Steve Kinser, Jason Sides and Joey Saldana.

The Dash was a fast paced race that saw Donny Schatz lead from green flag to checkers to take the pole for the A Main. To his outside would be Outlaws point leader Daryn Pittman.

The A Main ran without incident until lap 20 when James McFadden would shred a left rear tire to the hub. While under caution Donny Schatz, who was leading the race and had since the drop of the green, had a right rear tire begin to go down. Schatz attempted to keep enough heat in the tire to maintain the air pressure in it, but to no avail. With two laps to go before the green and no time in the work area, Schatz ducked in to the infield to have the tire changed. It was a risky move. Should the caution lights go out before the tire was changed he would be trapped in the work area and not finish the race. His STP/Tony Stewart Racing team sprung to action and got the tire changed and got Schatz back to the track before the caution lights went out; he would restart 19th. With only 10 laps to go Schatz was looking to salvage a decent finish, while Daryn Pittman was left to fight Dodge City for the top spot on the podium.

With teammate Cody Darrah on his tail tank, Pittman set sail. Pittman led the remaining 10 laps and was never really challenged. Darrah would lose the second spot to Paul McMahan and come home third. Schatz would climb all the way back to ninth, but it was a disappointment considering he had been on his way to a sweep of the weekend.

When the dust settled Dodge City had been beaten. The Outlaws had persevered and brought home the trophies and the cash. As the lights went out they were loading their trailers and heading out of town. They were on their way east to Ohio where there was another big score to be settled. This time, they would honor one of their own in Limaland and crown their King in Eldora.
