Kyle Busch, Bristol, and winning ... three words that obviously go together. After winning Saturday's Nationwide race, the Kyle Busch Show was again on display for fans during the Jeff Byrd 500 Presented by Food City.
Bristol, known for its beating and banging, did not disappoint. Carl Edwards started on the pole position and held the lead until lap 17, when Paul Menard took the lead. Cautions were flying by lap 29. A huge melee occurred after Jeff Burton slowed, causing a chain reaction and wrecking numerous cars. Involved were the cars of Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, David Reutimann, Jamie McMurray, Trevor Bayne, AJ Allmendinger and Brian Vickers. A competition caution flew at lap 52 to check the tire wear from the previous tire issues noted throughout the weekend.
On lap 439 there was another pileup: Kasey Kahne got loose, behind him Kevin Harvick slowed and Mark Martin got into the back of Harvick, spinning him, and again we had a chain reaction, which is a product of short-track racing. Collected in the wreck were the cars of Juan Pablo Montoya, Trevor Bayne, Clint Boyer, Jamie McMurray and Andy Lally.
The dominant cars of the race were those of Jimmie Johnson, who led four different times for a total of 164 laps, and Kyle Busch, who led seven times for 153 laps. Although not leading as many laps, Carl Edwards gave Kyle Busch a run for his money at the end of the race and at many times came close to completing the pass on Busch. In the end, Edwards just did not have enough to outrun Kyle and the #18 Toyota.
