Special American Flag to be unveiled tonight
NASCAR is a sport rooted in their patriotism, there is no denying that. So it's very fitting that before tonight's Coca-Cola 600, they will unveil the worlds largest free -flying American Flag during tonight's national anthem.
Helicopters will be raising and towing the 65 foot tall, 123.5 foot long flag to honor our country's veterans on this Memorial Day weekend. The flag weighs in at 200 pounds, and is 8, 000 square feet.
"What better way to show our pride and honor our fallen veterans then to share this maiden flight with the most patriotic fans in America during NASCAR's homecoming weekend. I have lifelong friends buried in our national cemeteries. It's a privilege to fly this flag in their honor," said US Army veteran Kevin Haynes, who spent most of 2011 in Afghanistan.
Haynes went on to say, "We too easily forget that these men and women volunteer to die defending our freedoms. I only wish we could do more to honor them."
I believe a lot of us in the NASCAR community would agree with Haynes.
